“Nortasunaren bila” a play which reflects the search for the identity of a country: Mythology and reality are mixed in our first dance show. The performance deals with the search for an identity by telling the story of a girl who, lost in a forest, has to find the identity of her country and her roots. Bodily expression and modern dance are an essential part of the show, although the production also uses songs by groups such as Su Ta Gar, Exkixu, Ken 7 or Kepa Junkera among others.

HISTORY OF THE GROUP

The Antzart group was created after various young people who have been involved in the world of dance and drama for years joined together. The current director of the group, Eneko Amezketa, created an idea about Basque Mythology and finally selected 14 young professionals who now form the group.

Apart from the choreography and the stage, the scenery, the props and the costumes have all been made with ideas from the members of the group. The lighting was also important and a professional in this field has created appropriate lighting for the show.

" “Nortasunaren bila” is the name of the show which the group wants to get off the ground, fusing drama and dance.

SYNOPSIS

When can you say that a language, a culture, a myth …… has disappeared? When can you say that the creation of our roots has got old? It is said that the end has come when these things have been forgotten.

" “Nortasunaren bila” is a story about a young girl who is lost in an individualistic world. But, her life begins to have some meaning when this adventure in search of her roots begins.

It was a country without an identity. The inhabitants of this country, apart from not having an identity, were not happy either. You could say that they had lost hope. But among all these problems, there is the possibility of overcoming their fears. Izaro is given the task of guiding this search for an identity.

She will be submerged in an unknown world, a world which has always existed, away from society. Elves, Lamias, witches etc are the characters which help the girl on her long journey.

It is not an easy journey. Izaro was lost in the deepest part of the forest when she saw a little flower and was attracted to the light which it gave off. To her surprise, the flower began to move as it is a fairy, Gauargi – the good side of life, light, day …

Guided by Gauargi, she starts the long journey in search of her identity in the summer, passing through autumn and winter until spring arrives.

However, things are not always easy. The dark side of life, the devil of the Basque Country ( Euskal Herria), darkness…..the girl will be followed by Sugaar, who will do everything he can to stop her achieving her objective.

The fight between good and bad, a mythological world, unknown to humans.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS WITH THOSE IN THE SHOW

IZARO

Like the island of the same name, Izaro is alone and isolated from the rest of the world as if she is anchored to something unknown. She is worried about the wild side of her interior and wants to find out what it is. This is what makes her escape from all the madness and chaos which has invaded her city. She tries to form relationships with other people, but she is different and feels isolated. This is why her rebelliousness and restlessness make her decide to begin a very different journey to a magic forest where she will find the religious origins of her country. This is how her journey “in search of an identity” begins, where she will be taught about the roots she is looking for.

SUGAAR

He is shown as a malignant being, like the mythological devil, although he is not always shown as such. In our story, he wants to hold up Izaro’s mission because he cannot stand anyone coming into his forest without his permission. Later on, he gets even angrier when he sees that the rest of the numens join together to help her without taking his opinion into account. This makes his attack on Izaro more violent. Finally, when Izaro manages to get all the necessary elements together, she becomes the holder of the reality of the forest and Sugaar cannot let her leave.

GAUARGI

This character represents the guide. The story goes that when the countryfolk got lost in Mount Gauargi at night, she appeared and showed them the way home. In our story, Gauargi also has this role and accompanies Izaro on her search. Gauargi’s wings remind of a sunflower. The sunflower has strong symbolic strength in the Basque culture. It is a solar symbol and our predecessors used it to protect themselves from the spirits of the night (this is why it was and can still be found on doors as protection). This is what protects our two main characters on their search, and this is why Sugaar needs to separate Gauargi from Izaro.

IRATXOAK (DUENDES) o MIKOLASAK

These represent the naive and playful side of the forest. They are easily-frightened and friendly. They are always willing to help. They are the comic part of the story.

GALTZAGORRIAK

These are naughty little elves, they are not bad, but they enjoy the results of their pranks and this is why they accompany Sugaar in this story, rebelling against the rest of the forest. They want to draw attention to themselves, which is why they always do the opposite to the other inhabitants of the forest. There is even a scene where they fight with the Iratxos.

AMALUR / EGUZKI / ILARGI

Amalur, one of the goddesses of the Basque religion, is Mother Earth, and only appears to change the seasons – she makes time pass. She appears with her two daughters, Eguzki and Ilargi (the sun and the moon). Ilargi was created to protect the country people from the dark spirits. Afterwards, Amalur created Eguzki, with much more power to keep these spirits away during daylight. So, when Sugaar takes Gauargi away from Izaro, she calls on Ilargi (the moon) for help. Ilargi comes quickly to protect and accompany Izaro in the lonely darkness until her sister, Eguzki (the sun), comes with Gauargi, who she has rescued with her solar power.

AKERBELTZ

He is an underground numen, lord of the bonfires. He is the God that witches worship in their rituals. In our story, he appears in summer, summoned by the witches to give Izaro the gift of culture via the element of fire.

MARI

The Goddess of the Basque religion, Lady of Anboto and Sugaar’s wife. It is said that storms happen when she is with him. Two children are born of their union, Atarrabi ( a good spirit) and Mikelats ( a bad spirit). In our story, Mari appears in Autumn, to give Izaro the gift of language, a fundamental element for the knowledge of her culture, via the air.

TARTALO Y BASAJAUN

These are two feared gentiles. Basajaun, guardian of the forest and flocks and herds, is a positive character, unlike Tartalo, with his one eye, who appears to eat all the creatures that cross his path. Despite this, in our story, they join up in Winter to offer Izaro the gift of richness and its fruits via water.

LAMIAS

The Lamias appear in rivers and lakes while combing their long hair with a golden comb and hiding their feet (duck’s or chicken’s) under the water, as these could give them away as Lamias – enchantresses of country people. In our story, they are the characters of Spring who give Izaro the last element which she needs to finalize her search.
